Course Description

This course will cover two main aspects. The first one is related to gaze nystagmus and the assessment of spontaneous nystagmus making emphasis in the different types and the differential diagnosis of peripheral and central spontaneous nystagmus. In the second part, the nystagmus evoked by position, head-shake and mastoid vibration will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:

  • To learn to differentiate between peripheral, central spontaneous, and positional nystagmus
  • To identify the different types of positional nystagmus by the assessment of the response in different positions
  • To understand the meaning of head-shake nystagmus and vibration-induced nystagmus in the context of vestibular compensation
