Speech audiometry is the measurement of how well a person detects, hears, and recognizes speech such as words and sentences. Speech audiometry is important because most patients with hearing loss have difficulty understanding what others are saying. You’ll learn in this course about common speech audiometry tests and how they are administered. You also begin to appreciate why it’s better to present speech materials like words to a patient via a recording on a CD or some other device rather than speaking into a microphone. [more details]

The location of the cochlea in the petrous temporal bone will be explored through human dissection and the features of the organ of Corti will be presented using histological sections. A mechanism for cochlear function will be outlined and applied to an understanding of congenital deafness and to the use of a cochlear prosthesis. Finally, the course will also follow the path of the auditory nerve into the brainstem and examine the main connections from the cochlear nucleus to the cerebral cortex. [more details]
